A happy one to all.
I had to almost argue with my 12 year old daughter that it isn't an equinox. Im not sure where she got that in her head.
On another note, I've been switched over to grid power since November. Im looking forward to sunnier days to quench the fresh squeezed electrons from my solar panels and steep my house in them.

Drew, I'm a whole lot older than 12, yet sometimes mis-speak the name of the ... Well, we know it's solstice, the question is whether it's 'holiday' or 'holy day'.

No, the question is ... does your niece understand the significance of the day, on some level? So many different forms of celebration were practiced around the world, at some point in history. http://www.religioustolerance.org/winter_solstice.htm

I recently explained to my grandson (age 12) how to know the difference between a "waxing" and "waning" moon. He might be interested in solstice information too.

I think I'm going to dig out some incense and enjoy the evening. Happy, happy; Joy, joy!

Tell me about it! My hot water tank that is heated by solar has been at 60* for over a week. Today was kind of sunny and got the tank up to 85*. That little bit of sun definitely helped me out with the electricity, though- 7 kwh today, still more than I'm using. But it wasn't like that yesterday, and won't be like that tomorrow. Cheers to some longer days!

Seeds are started, :o :o :o Oh My Goodness, I am 2 to 3 months away from starting seeds. I expect a cold spring this year because the rest the year has been so screwed up. We had 60* to 70* most of Dec, very unusual, and it never snowed until very recently, We often get snow in Oct and it always snows by the beginning of Nov here, very unusual year for us in the north east.

Haven't quite got the ambition for most seeds yet but have sweet potato slips and tobacco started. With the greenhouse now I'm not too worried about the screwy weather. The bigger issue for me is eating all the existing food in the greenhouse and cold frames to make room for new crops. Now that's a first-world problem.
