So now I'm fiddling around with changing the burn tunnel dimensions by inserting bricks along the bottom. I wonder if the cross-sectional area between my heat riser and barrel ended up being less than in the burn tunnel (due to shifting it to the side when installing it). The burn seems a bit more "rockety" with a smaller burn tunnel.

I also need to work on the feed tunnel. The factory store of the perlite producer sells some sort of interesting looking high-temp insulating board about 2 inches thick that I would put between the barrel and the feed tunnel and make the feed tunnel thus 2 inches narrower in one direction. Right now the barrel is even with one wall of the feed tunnel and I'm thinking that very hot surface is pulling air up and thus increasing the tendency for smoke to escape.
