Since having the problem with the heater, a friend introduced me to her power strip with a battery back-up. She has one large enough for all the electronic equipment and in the event of an outage it will provide 20 minutes of power. This gives time to shut down the computer and media safely, without corrupting data. I need to go to Best Buys or look on-line to see what I can find.
