While researching the difference between an orchard and a grove, I stumbled upon an unfamiliar word: streuobstwiese.
The wikipedia page is written in German and I don't read German. However, from what I gather, it is a planting scheme that originates from Germany and judging from the looks of it, it appears as if the owner of the land wanted to have a fruit orchard and a pasture in the same spot. To accomplish these seemingly mutually exclusive goals, it appears that the trees were planted at the maximum possible density the land could carry without shading out of the pasture's grasses.
Anyone have any further information on the principles or particulars that one would follow to accomplish such a thing?
